07. YOU CAN TELL YOU'RE FROM BISBEE WHEN.....

When you remember the times when you walked into the PD store, loaded your basket, and gave the check out clerk you dad's company number instead of money.  I was amazed when I found out that not everyone shopped that way.

When you checked to see what movies were playing at the Lyric. You knew that the movies changed on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday.

When you remember that "Citation Alley" was painted along the "new" road around the pit.

When you remember tourists stopping because they were afraid that ore was going to fall off the conveyor belt crossing the "new" road around the pit.

When you don't find a slag dump offensive because it brings back memories of when home was a booming mining town, life was simple, and we all felt secure knowing our parents left our front doors unlocked 24 hours a day.

Thank you very much for all of these wonderful memories.

06. YOU CAN TELL YOU'RE FROM BISBEE WHEN.....

The big May evening event was going with the family to Main Street to see
the BHS graduating class portraits on display at Art's Photo Center.

The Lowell business district was a bustling center of commerce that included
Culiver Motor Company, The Arizona Baking Company, Lowell Drug, Lowell
Theater, Brophy Garage, Ortega Shoes, Bisbee Lumber Company (still there,
thank God) and so many others.

The busiest traffic you can remember was anywhere near a business district
on Payday (always spelled with a capital P) and finding a parking spot in
Uptown on Payday was the hardest part of the day.

If you worked for The Company, you could buy anything at any PD store and
simply sign for it. ( Some miners were so in debt to the Company store that
all they got on Payday was a pay stub).

The Boy Scout troop for Bisbee was "Troop 1" and they owned their own
building.

Cruising the Vista was absolutely required before you could go home for the
night.

The big summer event (other than the Fourth of July) was the rock concert at
the National Guard Armory.

The speed limit down the main drag is 25 mph and no one is going that fast.

When you heard the blast go off, you knew you had only 5 more minutes until
sixth period was over and school was out for the day.

You still think that Warren is where the "snobs" live and Old Bisbee is
where the "canyon rats" live.

Diving into the Elks or Country Club pools in early June was the highest
order of bravery (boy was that water cold)!

You still think the Merchant's Fair was the most fun fair you've ever been
to.

KSUN radio (1230 on your AM dial) was the only station you could pick up,
but you always felt sad when it went off the air at 10:00 pm, and getting
the evening DJ job meant instant fame at high school.

In the summer we'd play in the ditch and go exploring.  Going through the drainage tunnels feeding the ditch.
The smell of the weed (?we called it cancer plant) that grew wild across from the Circle K.
The pride you had then and now of being from Bisbee and the Pumas.
Going shopping at Woolworth's and the unique smell within the store.
After school, from Lincoln Elementary, going to buy candy at Moore's.  Seeing Mr. Moore cutting meat and Mrs. Moore working diligently.
The many impressions these working community folks had on my life and my memories.

You and your friend live in Bakerville.  You are 12 and 13, for enjoyment you meet half ways and sit in the middle of the street going up to American Ave. You talk from 7:00pm til Midnight when your parents are screaming at you to get home. You know the whole neighborhood heard. And now we may be older but our parents still live in the same house and we can still visit our parents and then meet each other half ways.

36.  YOU CAN TELL YOU'RE FROM BISBEE WHEN.....

You can tell your from bisbee when you can remember the good times at the hitching post, and the wonder bar.

29. YOU CAN TELL YOU'RE FROM BISBEE WHEN....

You mention a Lowell teacher named Bendixon (sp) or a Horace Mann teacher named (Grey) and others remember.

You sneaked in to play football on the circle in front of the ice house across from Lowell School. It was the only patch of green grass in can remember in Lowell.

You could hand walk across the gulch on a gas line that followed a foot bridge in front of your house. I think the location was called Brophey's Hill. My playmates were the Fishers (Chuck, Joey, and Danny), Brian Phillips, and Reuben Benevediz.

You could sneak off and play in the old Finish theater when yoou lived in Johnson's addition.

You were allowed to walk around the old Sacramento Pit on the way to Horace Mann when you lived in Jiggerville.

You made drivers angry when you and your buddies (Sammy Barrow for one) would slide down the snow beside the High School until the pavement was clear, polished ice and impossible to drive up. During this time, I lived 2 doors up from the High School, so I was in the gym every time the doors were open.

Dee Ray Smith

I wasn't really a native of Bisbee but lived there several times. I attended school in Lowell and Horace Mann and attended part of my Freshman year but was unable to participate in sports because my parents were not with me ( lived with my sister, Helen Hardt). I also spent the summer before my senior there. During that time my cousin, Dohn Sims and I batched it and I worked at the grocery in Bakersville while he strung cable for tv.

26. YOU CAN TELL YOU'RE FROM BISBEE WHEN....

When you remember walking to Lincoln School and stopping at Moore's Grocery for candy.  What a neat place that was!!!

When you spent the summer looking forward to the 4th of July and the Coaster races.   And of the course the parade which we thought was the greatest in the world.

When your parents would send you up to the Artic Circle to get five
fantastic hamburgers for a buck.

When all of these years later you still talk about the influence Mrs. Medigovich had on your college career and your life.

Bisbee was definitely the best place on earth to grow up!!!!!

27.  YOU CAN TELL YOU'RE FROM BISBEE WHEN....

you used to fall asleep to the sound of the juke box and teenage laughter coming from the Arctic Circle.

you had a friend who drove into the traffic circle and crashed at the
fountain.

you played soft ball on a team called Warren Laundry.

01.  YOU CAN TELL YOU'RE FROM BISBEE WHEN....

A Mining Tale

by Larry Wittig

The “Mile High City of Sunshine”
Lies a’sleepin’ among the Mule’s
Twixt rusty rugged mountain peaks
And skies of azure hues.

From Main Street, very serpentine,
Her streets and alleys spread
From brightly colored shops below
To weathered homes above.

Built by rugged miners,
With pick and bit and sledge,
Who’d wrestled free her precious gifts
Of copper, gold and lead.

The city grew, her riches milked,
By men who sweat and swore,
Until at last, her treasures gone,
She slept and grew no more.

Then one day the “new ones” came,
In tie-dyed shirts and sandaled feet
And occupied the weathered shacks
She cradled in her arms.

The picks, shovels and drills were gone,
Replaced by clay and pen,
Until, at last, the once proud town,
Began to wake again.

Now we climb her well worn steps
And hike her narrow streets,
And marvel at the history
Preserved in brick and stone.

From shop to shop we walk and talk
And view her wealth, in kind,
By artisans made, to take if you’ve paid,
For now the tourist is mined.

53. YOU CAN TELL YOU'RE FROM BISBEE WHEN.....

>you fell into one of 4 main categories at High School:  The Nerds, The Jocks, The Heads (Freaks), or the Cowboys.  And though these divisions were there, we all got along just fine.

> You had art class with the ever cool Mr. Turner.

> To this day, you are totally amazed that there weren't more of us maimed or killed in DUI accidents.

> Parties usually happened on weekends, starting at night fall at the Vista Park for the beer collection, and usually ended up at either:  the divide, the river, the rifle range, Fernando's Hide Away (the hard core party spot), and if we really got lucky, the Mitchell's house!

> You went to the drive in movie theater towards Naco... One guy drove in and paid, as 3 or more of us would be hidden in the trunk.  And heck with the movie, it was party time, but just hope you weren't standing on an ant hole.

> BHS was THE track team to beat in the state!

> The Forth of July was THE biggest party day of all.  Not even the cops seemed to mind us partaking of our indulgences at the Vista Park.

> And for us select few "dumpers", we were the only source for the worlds finest turquoise, Bisbee Blue, until the Matthew's clan bought the rights from PD in '72.  It was nice going to school with big pockets full of money!  Wish I kept more of the rock though.

> Walking down the sidewalks of upper Bisbee, and seeing the initials MG on every new slab of cement there was.  Wonder who that was?

> And on a sadder note... your heart got totally broken upon the tragic early death of Luke Davey.  The road going around the pit turned, and he and his motorcycle didn't.  Such a loss.

you know just how many times Angelika's toilet has blown up from line pressure.

A note from OFF The WALL in BISBEE, This situation occurs because most of the sewer lines in Tombstone Canyon are daisy chained together and there is no even slope to the lines; as a consequence, blockage down line will produce head and back up the line when a toilet is flushed, a dish washed, or a bath taken..

02. YOU CAN TELL YOU'RE FROM BISBEE WHEN.....

I remember moving to Bisbee in 72. My husband had been an architecture major
at the U of A. I was trying to complete a degree in art & art education. Tom
bought a house in Bisbee for about $2,000 & at that time, we found out later
we had been "taken". Houses around us were going for $500 in back taxes.  Tom
was an electrician at Black Cloud Electric. We lived at the top of Moon
Canyon Drive & we got married on the hill behind our house. Yes, we were some
of the first "hippies" to move to Bisbee. I've got a great picture of all of
us on that hill & when I have time maybe I'll send it to the newspaper.

What I remember about Bisbee was......one night our yellow bug light went out
& we found a soft pink bulb to replace it. The next day a middle aged
neighbor man came over & gave us a whole hand full of different colored
bulbs. He said we could really get our neighbors going, especially they were
so curious about us young folks moving in. I got the biggest kick out of it!

03. YOU CAN TELL YOU'RE FROM BISBEE WHEN.....

For the Catholic kids, who went to St. Pats, who can forget Sister Cecilia Loretto, and her ubiquitous clicker to bring her charges to heel, and the way she would point when angry with her index and middle fingers together and he ring and little fingers together.  That was so neat, we all tried to mimic her.

She was born in Bisbee around the turn of the century, and her mom still lived in Warren in the late 50's.  She actually attended St. Pats when she was growing up. When we had Civil Defense Drills, to protect ourselves from a Russian nuclear attack, she would afterwards regale us with stories of how, when she was a student there, they would have to go hide in the basement when Poncho Villa's marauders were spotted near town.

Also when Sister Crispina would come by and twist your ear if you forgot your multiplication assignment in 3rd grade.  And the dreaded Sister Catherine Michelle, who single-handedly filled the office of the only child psychologist in the county (in Douglas).

These were the days when there was universal agreement that Bisbee was on the 'Top 10 List' of cities the Russians intended to nuke when they attacked the US (because of the copper mines, of course).

And you must be from Bisbee when you can remember eating tacos at the OLD El Charro Restuarant, before they tore it down to enlarge the Pit.

I am reminded every time I visit of the time I should have lowered the bed of the dump truck.  I dumped the load behind Lowell School and pulled out from under it.  I then drove across the street to go back to the pit for another load.  I forgot to lower the bed of the truck and needless to say 12 telephone poles were never the same again. The bosses informed me they didn't like the poles snapped in half. This little absence of mind ended my career with Phelps Dodge. My brother Fred informed me after I left, he was asked several times if he was the Wright that pulled the telephone poles down.  He always informed them he didn't know what they were talking about.  Do you think he might have been ashamed of me?  Ha  I still have the fondness memories and enjoy all the comments as I can relate to them all.

...I remember the organized grade school touch football games on Sat. mornings....Greenway  vs Lowell, St. Pat's vs "Horse Man", etc....then the real games between the same teams on Sunday afternoon...tackle, unsupervised!!

...the Warren Ball Park was always open on weekends for pick-up football and baseball games on weekends....why is it locked now? Bill Taylor, you need to do something about that!!

...I remember Coach Fuzzy Warren yelling at the Douglas fans, "Which one was Dawson?", after BHS had upset the previously unbeaten Bulldogs and their great Gib Dawson in the 1948 Turkey Day Game in Douglas!

Hadley Hicks

41. YOU CAN TELL YOU'RE FROM BISBEE WHEN.....

you

Just finished reading the "You Know" column.  It was great.  Unfortunately, I had to go to the last 'history lesson' to find someone I knew, Hadley Hicks.  Of course, he was several years younger.  I might add, that Hadley was on of Bisbee High School's greatest athletes.  He was a running back who ran like the wind and wiggled like a snake.  I did not get to see him play but one game when I came home on leave from the Marine Corps.

You can tell you are from Bisbee when you participated in snow ball fights (rock inside) against the superior force from Horse Mann.  We would climb to Higgins mine and made our stand there.  There were more of them then us and we were ultimately slaughtered.   Oh yes, fistacuffs including the gals.

You can tell you are from Bisbee when we played two games against Douglas, Armistice and Thanksgiving.

You can tell you are from Bisbee when you played for BHS in a game that Douglas won 54-0.   Ouch.  We, BHS, officially won the game because Douglas had WWII vets playing on the team.  Score 2-0.  The Bisbee crowd (game was in Douglas) got tired of standing for the kickoffs.

You  can tell you are from Bisbee, when the following year, they beat us 6-0 and we won the 'copper pic' on Thanksgiving. (1947)

You can tell you are from Bisbee when every Saturday in the morning, you could find the game of the season being played with one neighborhood against the other in Bisbee, Lowell or Warren.  Of course, there were always fights but come what may, just before noon, everrything stopped.  We went home for lunch, picked up our nickels and went to the Lyric.

You can tell you are from Bisbee when you went to Economy's little candy store next to the Lyric to buy candy.  A Hershey which cost a dollar now went for 5 cents.

You can tell you are from Bisbee when if you lived up Brewery Gulch and Zacatecas, you cleaned all your trash and dumped in on the 'river' going down the gulch during heavy rains.

You can tell you are from Bisbee when the 'river' picked up and carried Mr. Clarks 16 wheelers as if though they were rafts.

There are hundreds of incidents which would let people know that I am from Bisbee but I believe that you knew you were from Bisbee when people would help people when in need.   When people would pick up the children and take them home til a new home was found when those children's mother died.  When people would gather and pay for funerals of the poor.  When merchants would donate clothing and food to poor families. This is what Bisbee was and I pray that it still is.

The people of Bisbee I knew and I will meet again, hopefully 'up there'.We will light a bonfire at Horse Mann field then play Douglas the next day.
